ACCESS-OA is an international collaborative group of orthopedic surgeons, patients, and researchers working together to improve access to care and patient outcomes for hip and knee joint replacement surgery for individuals with obesity or a high body mass index.

ACCESS-OA was initiated in fall 2023. Our group uses a participatory action approach to engage key shareholders (patients and surgeons) in co-design and collaborative work.

Together we identified research uncertainties on this topic of obesity and joint replacement from the perspective of specialist orthopedic surgeons and patients who have relevant lived expertise.  We then voted on priority areas to guide progress in research to inform improvements in delivery of care to this patient population.

Results from our priority-setting meetings will be published in 2025. Please check back for more details.

The work of the ACCESS-OA team continues, with ongoing research plans led by steering groups that include patients, surgeons, and academic researchers.

ACCESS-OA is dedicated to improving patient health outcomes and experiences in accessing health care services, with a focus on hip and knee arthroplasty for patients with a BMI ≥35 kg/m2.
